This was a project for my intro class in GIS, where I tested the hypothesis that counties with higher rates of manufacturing employment experienced greater rates of change in unemployment levels in the 2008 recession.

High manufacturing counties were queried through select by attribute where manufacturing employment was greater than 21%. The descriptive statistics for change in unemployment rate in counties with high manufacturing employment could be directly compared with other counties by inverting selection (Table 1).

I was able to support my hypothesis because the mean for change in unemployment rate in high manufacturing counties significantly exceeds one standard deviation from the change in unemployment in other counties. This exercise was helpful for me to practice hypothesis testing using GIS. Map creation and analysis were conducted in the spring of 2023.
